 Brilliant teachers lit a fire

Playing a Martin D-18 as tall as he was, Peter “Petey” Andrews studied with Tiny Moore, multi-instrumentalist driving force of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Decades later he also studied with Jimmy Wyble, standout jazz and western swing guitarist of the Texas Playboys, who additionally had toured and recorded with Frank Sinatra, Red Norvo, and Benny Goodman.

In between Andrews studied with Barney Kessel, a member of LA’s famed “Wrecking Crew,” of first-call studio musicians and player so influential that both Gibson and Kay named jazz guitars after him, as well as Terry Trotter, a keyboard master who recorded with Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Larry Carlton, and Celine Dion.

With a band of junior high school classmates Andrews created a regional hit, “Surfer’s Beach,” then fronted bands through high school and college. Since becoming a full-time professional in Los Angeles at 20, he has touched many music-business bases: live performance (as sideman and as bandleader), recordings, film and television soundtracks, songwriting (including collaborations with Toni Stern of “It’s Too Late” fame), with two-time Academy Award winner Joel Hirschhorn, and also extensive teaching of both performance and songwriting skills.

Guitar is his mainstay, but Andrews is also quite capable on piano, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, and other instruments.

All of this adds up to a deep commitment to American Roots and American Popular music, and a master education in blending with top-notch collaborators.

* He still plays that D-18 from childhood, along with the many other fine instruments by Martin, Gibson, Fender, Slingerland and Gretsch in his tool kit.
